Windows audio control panel may say the device is in 16 bit mode, but the ASIO driver bypasses the Windows audio system, and is therefore not affected by this setting.
These samples are not altered or processed in any way by the driver when recording via the ASIO driver. The audio stream captured from our USB 2.0 hardware is always 24-bit samples. However, this setting has absolutely no effect when recording using the ASIO driver, which users should always use in DAWs, due it's its low latency and increased peformance over WDM (Windows' own audio driver). I can record at 24 bits/96kz and then save it off as a WAV file and import it into Goldwave and see that it is indeed 24 bits and 96 kHz.
If I use a different DAW (Ableton Live Lite) it works fine (using the Focusrite ASIO driver). I have tried the Alternative initialization setting and it makes no difference. I've tried all possible combinations of settings that I can think of, but I can't get around this issue.
For some reason it limits the bandwidth to the same as a 44kHz recording even though the sample rate is 96kHz (I can see that the samples are actually at 96kHz - I get 9 to 10 samples in a 10kHz sine wave input). If I use the Direct Sound API, It records at 24 bits and 96kHz, but the bandwidth is only about 22kHz. I have tried the other settings in the device tab as well (IEEE 32 and shared). If I use the Core Audio/WASAPI system interface, I can record at 96kHz, but the bit depth of the recording is only 16 bits, even though I have PCM 24 bits selected in the Device tab.
I've downloaded the latest driver from Focusrite and installed them on my Windows 7 (64 bit) laptop. I recently purchased a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB sound interface and am trying to use it to record albums (needledrops) at 24bits/ 96kHz.
